I suck at taking pictures. I don't know if it's my lacking depth perception (fun at night) or my lacking of artistic ability (sure music and singing is considered an art . . . but we're talking visual here). Either way, I always screw up pictures and make a mess of them. I'll stick with my cheapo point and click digital and my cell phone cam. My abilities just don't warrant more investment. That an experimentation. You'll slowly figure out what does what and the trick is, it's all reversible. You can always close the program or file and open it back up. As far as your camera goes, you'll move along quickly once you get aperture and shutter speed down. I usually leave mine set on P. Occasionally I flick it over to the other two, but only when I'm feeling frisky. Also, if you have 100 bucks to spare, go buy the 50mm f/1.8 lens. It's an absolute must own for this camera. In fact i dont think there is even one picture of their wedding lying around... so like i said... useless.
