That’s quite the combination, wouldn’t you say? Yep, that sums up my Mother’s Day weekend. I’ve never been one to follow the norm.
I hope all the mom’s had a terrific weekend! I sure did! The weather was phenomenal!!!!!! Everything could have gone straight to pot and I’d have been happy with the fabulous weather alone. But it didn’t go to pot. It was great all around.
Starting Saturday. We had a surprise visit from my mother-in-law. She was in town for the day visiting the Botanical Gardens with my sister-in-law and her family, so the boys and I met with them for lunch. It was so good to see them. (I haven’t seen them since a family baby shower a year ago) It was a large group of us with my MIL (mom), my sister-in-law’s family, a friend of theirs, my ex-husband and my boys, and it was fantastic fun!!
My MIL, who is 70 years old, recently had breast cancer, a radical mastectomy, and had just finished her second round of chemo last Thursday. And she walked around Botanical Gardens in 90+ degree heat for four hours. She’s a machine, I tell ya. Nothing is going to keep her from enjoying her life. I admire her strength so much. And I loved getting to see her!
My favorite part of lunch was a conversation I had with a friend of my nephew. She’d been sitting there watching us all and trying to figure out the dynamics of how “I” fit into this group. She asked me, “Are you HER sister?” pointing to my sister-in-law. Me – “No. Not technically. I’m her brother’s ex-wife.” I love the shocked look on people’s faces when they try to add it all up. I added, “But she’s my sister.” Then my MIL piped up and added, “And I’M her mom!” I tell you. . . I love these people!
Next day, Sunday, Mother’s Day, was slightly cooler but still gorgeous!! I got up that morning hittin’ it and gettin’ it preparing my Mother’s Day Brunch. I made sausage, egg and cheese English muffins, hashbrown egg bake, cinnamon Monkey bread, and a large fruit bowl. Oh yeah – mimosas for ME! Everything was a hit! Usually there’s SOMETHING that my youngest won’t eat, but not on that menu. He LOVED the hashbrown egg bake! I’ll post that recipe tomorrow.
Chris brought over these orchids. Aren’t they beautiful?!

He likes to buy flowers for me lately, not solely because he’s sweet like that. . . nope. . . he buys them to take photos of them.. . . THEN he gives them to me to enjoy. . . . AND to photograph too. Hey, it works for me.
Adam, my youngest, was asking me what I wanted for Mother’s Day and I told him that if he could just fix my toilets for me, that would be the bomb. I’d buy the parts and he just do the labor. He said, “Oh Mama, I’LL buy the parts AND fix your toilets. I’m the MAN!” He cracks me up!
That was the plan. He bought the part and set out to figure the contraption out. I learned one thing about my youngest child. . . and that’s that he HATES reading instructions and if he can’t just “figure it out”. . . it ain’t gonna get done. He got frustrated, so big brother (who REALLY didn’t want to do this job) jumped in to help. It turned out to be a much more difficult job, and another trip to Home Depot, than expected. Two hours later after my bathroom had looked much like a war zone, it was fixed. Woohoo! One down. One to go.
Chris had to go to work, so the second one didn’t get fixed. But he said that now that he knows what he’s doing, maybe the next one won’t take as long.
Thank you boys!!!!
Mommy loves you!!
